Sight Word Wiggle

Short description of activity:  Students listen to a story read aloud and strike an assigned pose when they hear a sight word. Can be used with WTW lists, blends, and other grammar categories.

Minimum Time Needed for Activity: 5 Min

Grade Level: K-5th

Subject Area: ELA

Materials:         

  • Drawn or printed figures of people in poses (hands in the air, hands on hips, touching knees or toes) posted/projected on board.
  • Sight words under each figure (can also be blends, diphthongs, ‘-ed’ sound, etc).
  • A dictation of 2 to 5 sentences that includes the sight words at varying intervals.
    • An example of a dictation using Frye First 100

Set up:

  1. Post poses and sight words in an easily seen place. Have students stand and face the posted images.
  2. Explain that when a student hears a sight word, they should strike the pose associated with it and hold the pose until they hear the next sight word.

Play:

  1. Slowly read the dictation including the sight words, emphasizing and pausing when a sight word is read.
  2. The first few rounds of playing, have someone stand near the poses and point out the sight words when they are read aloud. The more often the activity is done, the less often it will have to be pointed out or emphasized when read.

Variations:

  • Change which words are associated with which pose after students become accustomed to the activity and have memorized which word is aligned with which pose.
  • Change the dictation so that frequency of words appearing increases to speed up the amount of movement (see example III).
  • Use Words Their Way sorts- prefix, suffix, roots, adding -ion, long/short/oddball vowel, etc.
  • Use suffix “-ed” with three poses that sound like “d,” “t,” or “ed.”
  • Use rhyming words.
  • Use only two poses: “correct” and “incorrect.” Use with conjugation of verbs, irregular verbs, subject/verb agreement.
  • Have integers 1 through 10 under poses and call out simple addition or subtraction equations.
