Before schools closed this spring, the Windsor Southeast Supervisory Union used their inservice days as an opportunity to invite parents and students to participate in various activities and to taste test healthy recipes. There were pumpkin bread samples and a smoothie bike to blend up smoothie taste tests. Recipes cards were given out to recreate the healthy treats at home or in the school cafeteria. The afternoon activity sessions included pickleball, floor hockey, aerobic bingo, bowling, yoga, mindfulness, and snowshoeing. The Wellness Day’s pickleball tournament was made possible with new pickleball equipment purchased for the event and will be used in physical education classes moving forward.
Adding opportunities for extracurricular activity was a nice shift for all who participated – it got everyone to move more and it reduced their screen time. Teachers and parents were opened up to a variety of ways to increase healthy eating and physical activities at school and at home.
