As we look for activities to stay safe and healthy during the pandemic, getting active outside can entertain us while supporting our physical and mental health. To add some fun to your walks and hikes in the woods, foraging for wild edibles is nature’s scavenger hunt. Of course, first connecting with your physician and learning from experts is crucial to ensure that you don’t consume anything that is unsafe for you or poisonous. The host of the upcoming PBS series, Wild Foods, has put together a beginner’s guide to foraging for chaga fungus – a perfect beginner’s edible to search for since it has such a distinct look, making it difficult to mix up with anything harmful. Chaga is packed with antioxidants and is understood to improve immunity, chronic inflammation, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. Watch the Wild Foods Explorer Series: Chaga video and learn how to make chaga hot chocolate. There is even a great Sweet Enough swap option where you can opt to add your own maple syrup sweetener rather than using the pre-sweetened packet. Remember, the recommended daily max of sugar is 6 teaspoons for women and children and 9 teaspoons for men!
