Happy summer! School is out and we hope all of Vermont’s kids and families have the opportunity to enjoy great local food and activities in our beautiful state. Summer meals and activity programs in communities across the state are an excellent resource for good nutrition and physical activity. Did you know that only 1/3 of our kids who receive free meals during the school year have access to nutritious meals in the summer? Kids especially need to be active during the summer-physically and mentally-and get good nutrition so their developing brains retain all they have learned over the school year.
If you are looking for a fun place for your kids to get out and play with their peers—and also get free, nutritious summer meals-you can text “FOOD” to 877-877 to find out what programs are available in your community. And, don’t forget to check back to RiseVT’s calendar for free activities for kids and families all summer long. Last tip, try calling 2-1-1 on your phone to speak to the great team at United Way who can help you find food and fun this summer.
